A plain comparison of three ways officers keep track of off-duty, extra duty and secondary employment work. The short version: keep using your department's system. Centurion Blue is your own private record.
Many departments run off-duty, extra duty and detail jobs through a scheduling platform, run by the department or by a vendor, that posts, assigns and bills those jobs. RollKall, PowerDetails and Off Duty Management are examples of that kind of system. Keep using it. Centurion Blue does a different job: it is your own private record of everything you worked and earned.
| Your department's or a vendor's off-duty system | A spreadsheet or notes app | Centurion Blue | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it is built for | The department or vendor that runs it and the businesses that hire officers. It posts, assigns and bills the jobs that go through it. | Whoever builds it. You design it, maintain it and check the math yourself. | The individual officer. You sign up for yourself and pay for yourself. There is no department account. |
| Who can see your records | Decided by that system and by your agency. Its administrators can generally see the jobs it manages. Read its terms and your department's policy. | Anyone you share the file with, and anyone with access to the device or cloud account it lives on. | The jobs, pay, mileage, expenses and tax records you log sit in your own account and are never shared with your department. What you choose to post or accept, such as a Job Exchange post or a shift from a scheduler, is seen by the officers or the scheduler involved. |
| Covers jobs outside that system (cash, check, direct W-2 work) | It records the jobs that run through it. Work arranged anywhere else has to be kept somewhere else. | Yes, if you remember to type each one in. | Yes. You log any job yourself, whoever set it up: 1099 work, check-only jobs and direct W-2 employers. |
| Department overtime and court time | Usually kept in your department's payroll or timekeeping system instead. This varies by agency. | Yes, if you build the formulas and keep the rates current. | Yes. Department Paid Overtime, Department Double Time, Call Back and Court Time are job types, logged beside your off-duty work. The Denver edition figures them from the Denver pay scale. Everywhere else they come from the hourly rate and multipliers you set. |
| Mileage and expenses | Not what a scheduling platform is for. Check what yours records. | By hand. You look up each drive and the IRS rate for that date yourself. | On 1099 jobs the app measures the drive and values it at the IRS rate in force that day, counted by the rule you choose in Settings. Work expenses and receipt photos are logged by category. Record keeping only. |
| Year-end packet across all income | Covers the jobs that ran through that system. Ask what history or export it offers. | Whatever you add up yourself. | Year End Tax Reports as a PDF, covering every job you logged: income by category, 1099 mileage, expenses and a quarterly breakdown to hand to your tax preparer. The job log and the expense list also export as CSV. |
| Works if you change agencies | Tied to the agency or vendor that runs it. Ask what you can take with you before you leave. | Yes. The file is yours. | Yes. The account is under your own email, not your agency, and your history stays in it. Outside Denver you set your new rate and rules in Settings. If you join the Denver Police Department, you can switch to the Denver edition in Settings and keep every record. If you are leaving Denver for another department, write to support@centurionblue.com before you change anything. |
The first column describes a category of software in general terms, not any one product. Each platform and each agency sets it up differently, so check your own system's terms. The product names above belong to their owners and are used only as examples. Centurion Blue is not affiliated with them.
If your department assigns off-duty jobs through its own system, that system stays the place where you pick up and work those jobs. Nothing about Centurion Blue replaces it, connects to it or reports back to it.
What Centurion Blue adds is the part that belongs to you: one record of every job from every source, the pay you were owed and whether it arrived, the miles on your 1099 jobs, your work expenses and receipts, and reports at year end. It is the same record whether a job came through a platform, a phone call from a business owner, or your own department's overtime.
Mileage and tax figures in the app are record keeping and estimates, not advice. Ask a tax professional which rules apply to you.
Denver officers can open a free Primary account. Officers at every other department start with a 30-day free trial, no card required, then $59.99 a year or $7.99 a month.
